Happy Birthday!
The puppies are here (as they say in 101 Dalmatians ...)! 4 males and 7 females! 1 red tri male, 1 red merle male, 2 blue merle males, 2 black tri females, and 5 blue merle females. Apparently a very fast, easy delivery. They're such cute, colorful little hamsters!

THE NAME!
October 2003
I had a dream a couple months ago where my mother told me that she had found the world's most perfect name: London. (If that's not a sign, I don't know what one is!) So I've been thinking about it, and I LIKE it! However, I hadn't quite figured out how to fit it into a 'official' name (aka Poco the Amazing Circus Dog, Lord Fenwick of Christenson, Mr. Jonathon Brisbee). They all seemed SO cheesy. So then I looked up the meaning of the name 'London' and, ta-da: "Fortress of the Moon". That just speaks to me! Just a little bit different ... So, assuming our boy comes along his name will be:
Contact Point's Fortress of the Moon
"London"
Of course, I make no guarantees that this won't change with time!
PUPPY UPDATE - AUGUST 2003:
No puppy this time ...
Heard back from the breeder and she informed us that the puppies in the current litter are all taken. The next possibility will be for later this year, so we'll see if the right puppy for us appears then ... Been doing lots and lots of reading on puppies and development! Should be a fabulous experience when the time comes.
PUPPY UPDATE - JULY 2003:
We've chosen a breeder!
We've researched and narrowed our choices and finally decided on a breeder in California, Contact Point Border Collies. They breed with emphasis for agility which I'll admit is a major draw for me. Owners of dogs from this line said their dogs were healthy, friendly, super fast, responsive and sweet. Parents are OFA Good, BAER tested and CERFed yearly. All dogs are placed on a spay/neuter contracts and have their eyes and hearing certified before placement. Dogs are guaranteed free of hip and elbow dysplasia as well as eye problems.
They currently just had a litter, and are also planning another litter later in the year. We're going to see if there is a good match for us in one of these. Because we want to avoid comparing the new dog to Milo, we're placing an emphasis on blue merle dogs and hope to find one with the characteristics we're looking for.
Getting puppy home sounds like it will be quite a process, probably flying out and returning the same day with pup as 'carry-on' luggage. What an adventure THAT will be! I wish I could have found a breeder closer to me that had what I was looking for, that way I could visit several times with the pups and have a better idea of what their personalities were like, and I wouldn't have to travel (UGH, I HATE traveling!). The breeder is always going to have a better idea of what the personalities are like anyway, I guess, so it's probably all for the best.
I'm pretty nervous now that we've actually made the decision, and am hitting the books as all that information on young pups never applied to me before, so I didn't pay much attention! Suddenly 2 months seems like nothing, and four months is not that much better! So much to do, so little time!
In the meantime, Bruce is trying to find the perfect name, as he's always the pickiest when it comes to naming!
June 2003:
Well, it's official, we're on the look out for Dog Number Four. Crazy, but true.
After the horrible experience of losing Mr. Milo McMuffin, we realized that the chances of our Muffinhead returning to us five months later were practically non-existent. I was left with a gaping hole in my heart and in our lives where he had stealthily stole his way into our family. I'm not sure if I would have felt the same if I knew Milo was happy and healthy up living in Seattle, but I've just felt devastated since he left us.
I've been struggling with where we wanted to go now, with Milo gone forever. We began considering adopting another dog. However, Milo was an exceptional dog, and we have a large and diverse family already. We had to ask, SHOULD we get another dog? Is it fair to our existing household to bring in another unfamiliar personality that may or may not fit in? After all, even Milo took months before he was accepted by all the dogs. We had to ask, do we even WANT another dog. Definitely, we want Milo back and would take him back in a heartbeat, but another strange dog - do we want to take the chance on messing up the great mix of personalities we have now?
With these questions in mind we started searching for answers. I do feel that another dog COULD be a wonderful thing for everyone in the house, if it was the RIGHT dog. Border Collies are so DIFFERENT than my dogs, but so amazing as well. I would love to have the opportunity to live with and team up with such a personality! Fenwick really loves to have a high drive dog to keep up with him, which neither Poco and Brisbee can really do to the level that Fenwick would like. Brisbee and Poco don't bond with dogs outside of the household, but once a dog is accepted into the pack it seems new dogs add so much to both their lives. But where to get such a personality as to fit in with ALL of us?
After looking at some rescue dogs I realized that finding a dog with the temperament that we wanted that would also get along with my dogs and cats would be very difficult. In addition, I found myself comparing these dogs to Milo, as much as I didn't want to do so. We began thinking of a puppy, as my dogs would be likely to accept a puppy and raise it as one of the pack, and we would have no preconceived notions on a puppy's personality. We had never had a chance to raise a puppy, we missed that crucial socialization period with all our dogs. I think the results are long lasting and can cause lifelong problems, as evidenced by Brisbee's issues.
We began to realize that if we did get a puppy we would have the chance to do so much more with the dog, and perhaps bypass all the fear issues that plague our (wonderful) rescue dogs. Also, as evidenced in Poco's case, structure is so important for a dog if you want to be able to do activities like agility. Poco is not physically able to do everything that other dogs can. I still think she's perfectly happy, but with a working dog I think they NEED that mental and physical outlet. Finding a dog with good physical structure and health clearances is high on the top of our list of needs.
For the first time in my life, I'm considering getting a dog from a breeder. This is a completely foreign concept for me, especially as there are so many dogs needing homes out there. But if we were going to get another dog and have the best chance of our dogs accepting him, of being free from fear related issues and health/structural concerns it really seems like a puppy from a responsible breeder is the way to go.
So, we've been searching for the perfect breeder for us, but it's a strange process, and completely unfamiliar to me. I just know if we're meant to have another dog the perfect dog is out there waiting for us. Here is our list of characteristics we're looking for:
