1st PLACE NW REGIONALS TEAM GAMBLERS
USDAA NW Regional Championships- Canby, OR
June 27-29th, 2008
What is WITH the weather this year? We went straight from the 50s-60s to 104 for the regional this year. 104. That is INSANE. Talk about a bizarre weekend! Luckily London seems to do pretty well in the the heat, and even managed to keep all but one bar up for all three days. I was impressed - I could barely move!
Friday was our best day, it wasn't as hot and I could still function. 2nd in team standard, 1st in team gamblers, 6th for team jumpers and had a great snooker run too! He even kept his head running after Nova in relay, and the Supertastic Uber Fun Team of Ultimate Agility came away qualifying despite Barb injuring her ankle.
London got around this weekend! Kate Moureaux handled him in steeplechase and masters jumpers (too hot for me!), which was really fun to watch. Unfortunately London was suddenly struck by a weave issue for Sat/Sun and was popping out all over the place. Could it by going from 24 inch spacing to what looked like less then 20? The heat? Physical issue? Hard to say. Tammy also ran him in the grand prix finals, where a little bobble caused a refusal in an otherwise lovely run.
London was only entered sparingly throughout the weekend, which I was thankful for. We always have a lot of fun ... just wish it had been cooler!

It is extremely hard to be upset with London, he just doesn't have a mean bone in his body. So while he IS a very destructive dog in terms of chewing on things he's not supposed to, you can't really get too upset as he just doesn't have a hint of malice in him. He'll always be more than happy to give it up, or perhaps bring it to you to throw. He'd never do anything intentionally wrong, he's got 'Good Dog' written across his forehead.
London was difficult for me as a puppy, he came home at 8 weeks completely self confident and self reliant. It wasn't that he wasn't friendly, or sweet … but he just didn't 'need' us for anything! The world was so big and ready to explore, and he was off doing it, leaving us in the dust. It was so hard to really bond with him as he was so busy doing his own thing that I just couldn't get attached. I was really upset, bringing a fourth dog into the household was a huge step for us, he just didn't seem to fit in, and Fenwick just hated him.
When he was five months old I talked to his breeder and I was going to send him back so he could find a home where someone could really bond with him. It just wasn't happening for me. The arrangements were made, the shipping crate was ready, I felt this would be best for everyone. Funny though, the night before I was going to fly him back, once I had that decision off my chest and he wasn't really 'my' dog anymore it was like I really 'saw' him for the first time.
I had expected a very different experience raising a puppy, and I had expectations about how he should act from his breed, and I had expectations from doing border collie rescue and the relationships I had with those dogs. I had a boatload of expectations that had really prevented me from seeing London for the very unique dog that he is. Needless to say, we decided, wholeheartedly, that London was definitely a permanent member our family after that night. And Fenwick, well, it took him about a year, but he finally stopped being such an ass towards London.
I have a totally different relationship with each of my dogs, and it's true with London as well. It took me quite a while to learn how to give London the freedom to 'do his own thing' without feeling this was rejecting me in some way. London loves to play with me, he loves learn new things and he's always ready to work with me when I ask. He's also very comfortable off doing his own thing, and this is a totally new concept for me! I'm learning though …
